Downtown/Riverfront

Fort Lauderdale's New River flows through the heart of the city, both physically and culturally. Like a meandering tape measure, the New River threads through Fort Lauderdale's business and historical districts, as well as through its blossoming arts and science areas.

The man who lent his name to the city was Major William Lauderdale, who, arriving on the scene in 1838, founded 3 forts on the New River. These grew into the modern Fort Lauderdale of today, a dynamic community built upon the twin waters of the Atlantic Ocean and the New River.

In the unique downtown area, one can ride a Water Taxi to a dock convenient to the $52 million Broward Center for the Performing Arts poised at the bend of the New River. Major theatrical and musical productions and big-name performers can be enjoyed there.

Nearby, the family can enjoy the Museum of Discovery & Science, with its see and touch exhibits. Or the Blockbuster IMAX Theater, with its 55-foot-high movie screen.

The peaceful river is reflected in the 1 1/2 mile-long Riverwalk, a landscaped, leisurely stroll along smooth brick walks and low, scalloped planters, with ample benches and numerous boat moorings.
